Keep On Movin’

Posted in Art, constructions, dolls, handmade with tags , , , on July 6, 2011 by darcyarts

The air is hot and creepy. In the summer I just want to hibernate like an ol’ bear.

Still, I move on.  My desire to make more post-Vic models was stymied by donut orders.

This week I finished three custom donuts and a fourth for another person.

Making donuts is really fun and I love them so it’s not really a bad interruption. I’ll be working on a blonde with blue eyes when I return to that project. I need to work up some nice under things for the girls, bloomers, camisoles, all out of some vintage cotton.

I managed to wrangle up all the colored, 14mm tube beads I could find, in fact I think there are more coming in the mail this week, for the donut projects. I couldn’t spare the time to hand-roll cloth sprinkles. They don’t look as good as the beads.

I am having trouble finding a big supply of the Czech glass tube beads. in the bright colors. Those at my local bead store are very pale. I’ll keep looking.

Ignoring my sluggish temperament this afternoon I started my Bellatrix face. I’ve got a little body made up.

I love the eyes on this face. I’ll start her lips tomorrow and other facial details. She’ll look smashing with long tresses of hair. I may use some weave hair for her. We will see.

I can’t wait to do Snape.

Beautiful Day

Today was a very beautiful day. The last of the stormy rainy weather left its imprints. The earth was soaked and the sweet odor of vegetation filled the morning air. After a few quick errands, the Frank and Connie tag team shambled back to the shack and to our respective projects.

Frank is making some beautiful black ink drawings. His work is really captivating. Such great use of  negative/positive space.

For me, the end of June is all about donuts. Currently there are four on the table, three in this picture. I’ll make another tomorrow.

I started making ruffles over the last few days as part of my fancy mushroom project.

The ruffle is made to fit on the underside of the mushroom head. These ruffles will need a big mushroom.

I made a smaller ruffle for mushrooms constructed from donut hole pieces.  Or more exactly the material left over from cutting the holes.

I added lilac dots to the smaller beige  head. Soon I’ll add tiny this ruffle.

Oh, to see a tiny forest of fancy mushrooms soon.

I’m hoping to stock DarcyArts with a glorious selection in the coming months. Does this mushroom remind you of a delicious cupcake? I want one.

Head with Hair

Closer and closer we come to the dressed out Arthur.

His head is now covered with hair and I’ve begun to sew the pants.

Things are cruising right along with this one. Tomorrow the shirt, tie, vest and jacket will be made and then Arthur’s head will be united with his body.

I’ve had orders for three donuts over the last week so that slowed me down a bit but Arthur will be finished very soon.

Notice in the first photo that Robyn is still waiting and watching.

Semi-Fresh Work

Eleven donuts done and shipped. Whoo hoo!

They were a gas to see stacked on my work tables.

Shortly after I finished them off I had a request to go small.

Could I make a Kawaii-style pink donut about 18 cms?

Certainly. It’s going to be a new listing at DarcyArts as soon as I get the last stitches in.

She looks big in the close up but she’s a mini.

Each eye is dotted with a tiny rhinestone.

There is also a bit of silver glitter on the round black eye.

I’ll be playing with this design a bit. the facial elements are simple but I am going to tweak them to suit my vision.

How about rainbow eyes?

Increase the color level please!

I think I like it.

One of my goals this year was to refine existing designs.

Now, I must say, that the word refine is a bit cold and hints at perfecting a thing so maybe I’ll use the word amplify. I’m increasing the vibrational level of the mini donut eyes, moving the color level knob closer to 11.

Oh, my, yes. Better. The rainbow rings give the mini donut a kind of psychedelic owl effect.

I’m tweaking the eyes on my black octosquid, too. One simple element — a remnant of fleece with a rainbow circle pattern set off the experimenting. Serendipity.

Bag Em and Tag Em

Big donuts have taken over my art table! They look great all wrapped up and protected from fuzz and crud.

Pristine creations for a wonderful mom in Florida, these babies go out Monday, 11 in all by then, to attend a birthday party.

I have to pack them tight and haul the boxes to the post office. It’s a good feeling to finish a big order, get them all tagged and bagged and on their way. I imagine the happy recipient at the other end and that is definitely the best part.

These stacks of cutie-pie faux food represent hours of careful stitching. It’s a good meditation — slow, mindful, peaceful. There is love for the work and the buyer in every inch.

There is something about the roundness, the softness, the donutiness that comforts me.

Dang! I am envisioning a smaller, but equally cute little stacked cake soft sculpture. Yikes. Will I pull it off?

DarcyArts Diaspora

DarcyArts studio has a new map of the United States. Here, we will keep track of all the places Soft Boys, Big Donuts, Curly Stars and plush critters have gone.

There is a map of the world, too. Watched over by my two favorite Brits — Brian Eno and Bryan Ferry. As it should be, doll.

It’s very nice to have a visual record of the diaspora of DarcyArts pieces. Such a thrill to be scattering seeds across the globe.

I’ve sent donuts to England and squids and donuts down under. Canada, oh, Canada, close at hand and on the USA map, has taken quite a few items as well. Thank you, handmade-loving people of the world! You are making my dream come true.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It had been a while since I snapped any pix for the ol’ blog. I’ve been very busy stitching.
Yesterday I  photographed the beautiful cloud-filled sky.
Rain, dew covered things in the yard.
It was so cool outside in the early morning hours.
Frank and I dug it completely and were very grateful for such a cool summer.
The squash I planted late in the season do not agree.
These beautiful squash are from K and D’s lovely haven in Sebastopol. We are using up the veggies and my bod is digging it. I am saving seeds while telling myself I must start fresh with a new dirt trough next year. I think I’ll invert a big crate on which the pots sit and fill it with nice soil. Fresh, Fresh, Fresh.
Branding, Homer-Drool Style
I am admittedly donut obsessed. I do not eat them but I love their simplicity, their roundness, their colorful icing and sprinkles. That is why I make my donuts BIG.
I have a picture of a redheaded Soft Girl adorning the back window of the car just below the DarcyArts/Etsy graphic. I decided I needed some flash for the front.
The pink sprinkled plastic donut on my hood is perfect.  Mini, semi-passive street theater.
You recall my singing the praises of dog toys as an unrecognized source of very interesting creations. Well, this donut is proof of that. I thought I’d take a chance and pop into the PetSmart and there it was.
I’m fighting the urge to make tiny little one inch donuts and glue them all over the wind sheer tail thingy at the back of the car.
It’s all about promotion for DarcyArts — Dolls and Donuts.
Now I need to add a small curly star. I can hang it just inside the back window.
Namaste, fun lovers. ♥
