Bitchy Giggles

Egad! It seems that  a childhood illness I once suffered may have made a late-life return. The doctors agree that it looks like tuberculosis. That is the good news, assuming that we can agree, TB is preferable to the big C.

This is the point in my once workaholic creative life where I am trying to convince myself that slowing down is not so very awful.

So I’m fiercely independent. So I can’t sit still. I’m a doer. I do have a  list of tasks that constantly self-generates.

I’m wracked with maker-guilt at the measly amount of blog posts I’ve managed this month but my body demands that I take a frickin’ break.

I spent the summer arguing with myself about when I was going to chill. I planned long hours of peaceful reflection, film viewing, hours of devouring all the unread books I’ve got stashed but his leopard is finding it nearly impossible to change it’s spots.

I am impatient with myself. Work and care taking happen a little bit at a time and that will have to be okay.  I will get better at knowing my limits.

And now for the giggles (gifts from my daughter ♥):

Just Before Sunrise

Low light picture experiment with my $2 thrift store Canon Powershot A520:

I was trying to take it easy after my four or five-day return to evil caffeine. Man, it had been so long since I had the java juice it moved through my system like meth.

Let’s just say I over did it. You’ve seen that I’ve rearranged my living room and adjacent work space. I also sawed an old cheap couch in half. I thought I’d cut it onto small enough pieces to fit, bit by bit into our garbage containers. Crazy? Maybe. I still have some sawing to do.

Caffeine had allowed me to accomplish many things this last week.

I made a new mushroom.

I think the ruffle is a little stiff and a little too large but I love the colors.

Sun in Virgo

I love the Sun’s yearly trip through Virgo. It gives me extra energy and drive to clean the nooks and crannies, to clear the decks.

The Sun passing through Virgo may drive the garbage collectors a little mad. I imagine trashed items are popping out of waste containers all over town.

We are preparing for a warm house full of welcome visitors. My son is already here and my daughter will soon will be. That has added to my desire to tidy up the elements of home.

These pix were  taken in morning light with the aid of a tripod and a longer exposure. It is a very dark room after the scant morning light has traveled west.

Styling isn’t too snazzy. This room is a rectangle with a fireplace and the front door at one end, a wall of windows on the east side, and west wall, with the stereo, is aligned with the walking space to the rest of the house.  The furniture has to be placed in a space in the middle of the room between and closer to the windows on the east wall.

Through most of the day this room is rather dark. Though we resisted putting a video screen in this room for years (less temptation to veg out when one could be working ) we’ve given in and made this a media room. We can watch documentaries, Breaking Bad repeats or Akira Kurosawa movies in the middle of the day. That is my next pleasure-based goal. A private and lengthy Akira Kurosawa film festival. The Criterion Collection has 25 Kurosawa films!

Everything needs to be about function and flow. I need to  be able to move from one thing for another, to switch hats from artist/maker to caretaker, from blogger to film fanatic. Working at home, I must address multiple projects and responsibilities everyday.Life has taught me to be flexible. I am lucky to be able to take small bits of time for myself in the midst of all the demands.

Breathe

Rolling out the projects and delighting in construction, composition, design of all kinds!

It’s been hot as Hades here in the north country. It was close to 100 degrees yesterday. I worked inside all day until getting word that my donuts were okay for shipping to North Carolina. I went out the car to find the battery dead. Disaster was averted thanks to AAA. They sent out a battery fixing unit and we soon had a new unit and I was off to the post office. The battery dude was really nice.

Here is a picture of my little soft sculpture tableau. I call it “Hello Bliss.” It includes (in my mind) the muslin paint and glitter testing strip to the left in the picture. I made the hand stamped follow your bliss flag and the yellow mushroom ( I will make mushroom, I will make mushrooms!). I did not make the Hello Kitty.

Seeing this little assemblage makes me happy.

I’ve got the Bellatrix face going on, y’all. It’s coming together very well. She will look great when she has her curly long hair. Tune in next week for the reveal.

I’m working and trying to breathe deep in the summer air. It seems harder to do in the last few years. It seems my on again, off again asthma has been persistently dogging me since last fall. Please, lord, don’t let there be any fires despite how desperately the city editor at The Record Searchlight may pray for them.

Errands this morning will prevent me from sharing the wasp/spider story until tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Beautiful Day

Today was a very beautiful day. The last of the stormy rainy weather left its imprints. The earth was soaked and the sweet odor of vegetation filled the morning air. After a few quick errands, the Frank and Connie tag team shambled back to the shack and to our respective projects.

Frank is making some beautiful black ink drawings. His work is really captivating. Such great use of  negative/positive space.

For me, the end of June is all about donuts. Currently there are four on the table, three in this picture. I’ll make another tomorrow.

I started making ruffles over the last few days as part of my fancy mushroom project.

The ruffle is made to fit on the underside of the mushroom head. These ruffles will need a big mushroom.

I made a smaller ruffle for mushrooms constructed from donut hole pieces.  Or more exactly the material left over from cutting the holes.

I added lilac dots to the smaller beige  head. Soon I’ll add tiny this ruffle.

Oh, to see a tiny forest of fancy mushrooms soon.

I’m hoping to stock DarcyArts with a glorious selection in the coming months. Does this mushroom remind you of a delicious cupcake? I want one.

Dreams Say Obstreperous

In dreams last night I walked through a very simple place where the only element in the natural environment seemed to be orange sand. It was spare and creepy. There were motels and little diners as if the place was a tourist destination but why anyone would go there voluntarily was beyond my understanding.

I seemed to be walking through this bland place with my daughter. It felt like we had come upon it accidentally and we were anxious to get the hell out of there.

After sitting in a restaurant for a while the owner /manager of the place came over and handed me a paper that informed me that I had to write a 67- page paper as punishment for being obstreperous.

I may have committed some trespass of the rules of this odd place but I was in no way loud or engaged in any in any turbulent activity. I did not react while in the presence of the stereotypical shopkeeper — a skinny, tallish older dude draped in an apron, with a slicked back hair do. I was, however, very irritated by this turn of events.

I imagined sending in some triple-spaced drivel. Later, I decided I would defy the order.

Here I am at the keyboard with arms and hands aching from a long spell (six months) of doll orders. I told myself I would rest up at enjoy the lazy way of life. I confess, it is unknown to me. Time ticks and I want to keep moving before it kicks my ass.

My latest doll project came out very well but I cannot show it to you because it is a surprise for a very special and talented musician. ♥

I’ll blog it when it has been given to the intended recipient.

I am now intent on getting my teeth into three projects I’ve been moved to do. The post Victorian naughty ladies ala Egon Schiele, Mayan kings and beatnik gnomes are what I want to bring into fruition. I want these things in the DarcyArts shop for the holiday season.

I need to prep some Pink Sprinkle Donuts and Curly Stars, too.

It sure is a thrill to be busy working all year long! Ecstasy.

Thank you DarcyArts fans!

Freddie’s Face

Posted in constructions, design, dolls, handmade, rock n roll with tags , , on May 11, 2011 by darcyarts

It’s been most of the week that I have been stitching on Freddie’s face. I really wanted the eyes heavily done up with eyeliner, a Freddie in the 70s look, the glam Freddie.

I am hoping to get the planes of his face, the high cheekbones, more accentuated in the final stuffing when I sew the head onto the body.

First the clothes will be made. He’ll be dressed while headless.

The full 70s glam do will be perfected after the head is attached.

I must remind myself that all of my dolls end up looking wide eyes and innocent, cute more that exact replicas. That’s my style, yo.

I’ve been working and not blogging as much. You will soon see the result of my concentrated effort.

Now, for a little silly fun. This mostly purple wad of lint it what happens when you forget to clean the dryer lint trap. I wish I knew how to do felt craft.
